GROSS: …What each track means and what Ozzy Osbourne symbolizes and so on. And so, like, the Satanic imagery really means something to him. And I know since you worked at a mental health facility and worked with teenagers there, did you find that in some of the teenagers that Satanic imagery really connected to them for whatever reason? DARNIELLE: No, most of the teenagers who wanted to do Satan stuff that I knew were doing it specifically to make the adults jump, right? That was - the main thing is like if you find an adult who really believes that a Satan exists who wants to steal your soul – right? - and you say Satan to that adult with a look - a particular look on your face, you can get a giant rise out of that adult, right? If you - I mean, Satan is an awesome weapon in that case because, you know, these people who really strongly believe that, if they see you talking about how you want to worship Satan or whatever, it's sort of like if you're working with 2-year-olds, right? And a 2-year-old finds out what really bothers you, well, he's extraordinarily excited to have this power now. You know, and he'll just keep doing the thing that bothers you because it's nice to be able to have that kind of control, right? And for most of the teenagers who were into that stuff that I knew it was about 100 percent watch how people react when I do this. And we’re listening to Terry’s interview with John Darnielle, the founder, singer and songwriter of the band The Mountain Goats. He’s also a novelist. His first was about a teenager in a psychiatric institution who’s obsessed with the Black Sabbath album, “Master Of Reality.” His latest, “Wolf In White Van,” is now out in paperback. It’s about a man who as a teenager lived in fantasies inspired by metal, comic books and games, and shot himself in the face. He survived but has to live with chronic pain and a disfigured face. Darnielle used to work with young people in psychiatric institutions and had struggles of his own as a teenager. (SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED BROADCAST) GROSS: I'd like to play another song. DARNIELLE: Cool. GROSS: And this is from an album that’s pretty autobiographical, and a lot of the songs on this album relate to the abuse that your father meted out. DARNIELLE: My stepfather. GROSS: Stepfather, thank you for correcting me. And so the song I want to play is called "Dance Music." Would you introduce it for us? DARNIELLE: This is a song called "Dance Music" that takes place during two desperate points of my life. And the first one I'm 5. And we've - the divorce is fresh and we've just moved across town. And it was when I first started to notice sort of cracks in the edifice of the new home. And the next one - the second half of the song, I'm a teenager, and I'm sort of exploring my own ways of wrecking myself (laughter). GROSS: And your anger at your stepfather for doing things like throwing glasses at your mother's head. DARNIELLE: Yeah and there's - but there's, like I said, I don't want to sort of localize it entirely there. It's like there's also - I'm becoming a person who, owing to the last 10 years or so of experience, has really learned to internalize stuff and is taking stuff out on himself. GROSS: OK. By selectively speeding up the brain
By selectively speeding up the brain or the PG clock we show that the brain clock exerts a dominant action on the PG clock. Assuming that sNPF is temporally co-released with PDF, our findings imply that the central clock’s contribution to the gating of eclosion would be mediated through an inhibition of steroidogenesis starting in the early morning, when PDF release is believed to be maximal47. This signal would then cause the ecdysone titer to drop below the required threshold30,31, resulting in the commitment to emerge during the next gate to be made around lights-off48 and causing the gate to open starting at dawn of the following day.
Ecdysone feeds into the molecular clockwork by modulating clockwork orange and clock/period expression via the ecdysone receptor and the downstream targets, Eip75 (ecdysone-induced protein 75) and microRNA let-7 (refs 54, 56, 57). Interestingly, Eip75B is the fly homologue of REV-ERB α and REV-ERB β, which are key regulatory elements of the core molecular clock of mammals6,29. This notable conservation between mammals and Drosophila in the functioning and steroid feedback of the circadian clock extends the previously noted conservation at the level of the pacemaker itself58 and at the level of the intra-pacemaker coordination by peptides activating the same Family B1 GPCR signalling pathway vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP), and PDF, in mice and flies, respectively26,59). This could mean that the genetically tractable circadian system of the fly could also be used to understand how the different mammalian clocks are coordinated. It will also be interesting to determine whether similar deep homologies extend to the actions of the sNPF signalling pathway LED High Bay Light and those of its vertebrate homologue, prolactin-releasing peptide60, which has been implicated in the control of mammalian circadian rhythmicity and/or sleep regulation61.
Methods
Fly rearing and fly stocks
All flies were reared at room temperature (21–25 °C) on standard cornmeal/molasses/yeast food medium. All stocks with the exception of phm-gal80 and LexAop-Channelrhodopsin2-XXL (see below) have previously been described and are listed in Supplementary Methods. All genotypes involving the use of UAS-RNAi transgenes included a copy of a UAS-dcr2 transgene. When performing RNAi knockdown, several UAS-RNAi lines were tested and the one producing the most extreme phenotype was used (see Supplementary Methods).

A 1.2 Kb DNA fragment containing the phm promotor was PCR-amplified using primers (see Supplementary Table 1) that included BglII (5′) and SpeI (3′) restriction sites, and cloned into the pGEM-T easy vector (Promega, WI, USA). It was then sequenced for verification, cut out using BglII and SpeI, and cloned into pPelican P-element vector62 cut with BamHI and SpeI (first purified away from the fragment containing the HSP70 TATA and eGFP DNA); this last step was completed by Genewiz (NJ, USA). DNA from sequence-verified clone was then sent for transformation to BestGene (Chino Hills, CA, USA).

Figure 4 shows the transmittance and reflectance of transverse magnetic (TM) and transverse electric (TE) waves for metasurfaces working in transmission and reflection mode respectively at a wavelength of 520 nm. Figure 4a shows the diffraction efficiency versus angle of incidence for transmission mode metasurfaces at a wavelength of 520 nm with TM polarization. The theoretical prediction of diffraction efficiency of our metasurfaces is calculated by finite element simulations. The diffraction efficiency is defined by the ratio of the power of light that has been steered into the first order of diffraction to the total power that is incident on the metasurface. For TM polarization, it is shown that the diffraction efficiency of the +1 transmitted order T1 is approximately 35% over a wide range of incidence angles with a variation of 10% across the inclusive angular range. The diffraction efficiency of the asymmetric grating across the entire angular range of incidence angles is relatively uniform. In comparison, for a grating composed of a single Si nanobeam within one unit cell, the diffraction efficiency dramatically changes when the incidence angle is off-normal (see Supplementary Fig. S5). Therefore the metasurface with an asymmetric grating design is essential to maintain the uniform efficiency for varying incidence angles. The diffraction efficiency for the -1 transmitted order T-1 is approximately 8%, which is much lower than the +1 transmitted order T1. It is shown that the proposed metasurfaces with tilt phase profiles can steer the LED High Mast Lamp in the desired direction and suppress the diffraction into the -1 transmitted order. The efficiency of the zeroth-order transmittance is lower than 5%, while 15% of the light is reflected which can be potentially suppressed by adding an antireflective coating.
