Five weddings in the flood

Marrying five couples in one day is stressful and exhausting enough. Marrying them with wild winds and lashing rain as Cyclone Debbie made her way through Brisbane? Not a great help.
For wedding celebrant Josh Withers and his five newlyweds, it was definitely a day to remember when he pronounced them all man and wife amongst “water pouring in” at the Lightspace wedding venue in Brisbane.
“It was a pop up wedding event called The Elopement Collective, where we get a wedding venue, a celebrant, a photographer, a stylist and a florist for a day - and all those resources are shared amongst five couples,” Josh tells Be.
Claiming it’s one of the hottest wedding trends for thrifty and thoughtful couples, the ceremonies are spaced throughout the day with each group coming with a handful of guests for a “smaller, intimate wedding”

“With a traditional wedding costing upwards of $40,000, this costs them about $3,000. It’s a little bit more cost effective, but still beautiful and meaningful,” he explains.
But nobody had counted on Cyclone Debbie being an unwanted wedding guest.
“Every single couple thought it was going to get cancelled. From around midday, the whole of the Brisbane CBD was evacuated,” says Josh.
“We didn’t really know this because we were inside doing the weddings, but even inside the venue we had water pouring in because of the flooding outside and there was hundreds of millimetres of water coming in.
“Three of our couples had to change reception venues because the reception venues were under water.”
Brisbane-based Josh admits he was left drained by the hectic day, not least by having to make each ceremony special for the couples… and remember all their names.
“In my suit jacket pocket for every wedding, I’ve got a card with the couple’s name written on it,” he admits. “Over the last nine year’s as a marriage celebrant I haven’t had to use it, but I always have it there because I know one day I’m going to come up blank!”
