Projects generating renewable electricity

News×1

The first hydropower turbine to be built on the river Thames is to be unveiled next week.

Mapledurham Estate in Oxfordshire is now the home to the biggest Archimedes screw in the UK, bringing renewable energy to the river.

Taking over at the last working watermill on the river, the technology will allow electricity to be generated from almost 300 Olympic swimming pools of river water washing through the turbine every single day.

Projects generating renewable electricity for business are increasingly popular and now several other hydro-powered plants have been proposed for the Thames.

John Eyston, owner of the 900-year-old estate, said: "It's been our long-standing ambition to generate renewable electricity from the last working watermill on the Thames. We're delighted that the hydro-powered turbine is now up and running, providing a sustainable additional income for the future from this historic site."

The newly deployed turbine, which has been part-financed by retailer Marks & Spencer as part of its environmentally sustainable project, will also provide the British firm with enough renewable electricity to power one of its average stores each year.

As corporations understand, rising business electricity price is worrying so the news will be extremely beneficial to the chain.

It is said that converting old windmills to produce electricity can be complex due to the protection of fish and planning permission needed. But M&S is reportedly encouraging small suppliers like farmers to build renewable energy generation with the guarantee of a five year electricity fixed price contract.

When renewing electricity rates, compare business electricity suppliers and consider going 'green' with renewable energy sources like a hydropower turbine.
